Portugal’s government offers need-based study grants (“bolsa de estudo para o ensino superior”) to international and domestic students studying in higher education institutions. These monthly stipends support tuition and living expenses during your academic year.
Who Is Eligible?
International students, including Nigerians, may qualify under the “Concurso Especial” process if you meet one of the following:
- Benefit from a status under bilateral cooperation agreements
- Are a refugee, stateless person, or granted humanitarian protection in the EU/international law
- Hold a recognized residence permit in Portugal for at least two continuous years
Application Timeline
- Primary Window: 25 June – 30 September 2025
- Students beginning studies after 30 September can apply within 20 working days of enrolment
- Master’s or professional trainees who enroll mid-year also have a 20-working-day window post-enrolment

- Portuguese tax (NIF) and social security (NISS) numbers, or foreign equivalents
- Financial information, including bank balances and assets of all household members
- Proof of housing status (e.g. rental contracts, mortgage docs)
- Prior year tax return
- IBAN for stipend payments

Grant Amounts & Benefits
Based on family income and assets, you may receive the monthly grant (paid over ~10 instalments), up to €5,981.73 (current maximum).
